The ongoing search for flight 370 has turned into a race against time. the batteries in the plane s black box pinger are about to run out of juice if they haven t already. the australian ship ocean shield and submarine have the advanced technology to track it but only to a point. retired british lieutenant showed challenges they re facing. five miles per hour in a search area thousands of square miles. that will take you 3,000 years from top to tail to square away. good but not great. positives are search area shifted to 900 miles off the coast which means it s closer. we really need to get the aircraft out there, the p 8 s, p 3 s. getting them out there. transit times are halved. they ll have more time. the ocean shield is wonderful. ....
right. i m glad to see the one british nuclear sub showed up. these nuclear subs, as you know, travel at 30-plus miles an hour. they can go very deep, so they can get close to the signals. they operate all day at 30 miles an hour. the towed pinger operates at 3 miles an hour. we don t have much time on those batteries. we have 41 of these nuclear subs. certainly we could send one into the area in the next several days. we also have fleets of these p-3 aircraft that can drop listening devices as well as another aircraft that can be helpful is the mc-140 special forces transports. those can be area refueled, unlike the p-3s. the mc-130s, which are air force transsports, can stay out there all day long by being refueled. you re an expert, we know the ....
Last two weeks that you weren t ramped up? there s so much about this case that s difficult to understand, and that s one more thing about it. are you convinced, miles, that they re actually looking in the right area right now? you know, wolf, the information which leads them to that place, as you well recall, is based on this inmarsat satellite which is to receive essentially text messages from ships and airplanes at sea or in the air. it wasn t designed to be a tracking device. the engineers there did really good work to try to come up with some locations for the searchers, but it s a huge area and there s a lot of margin for error, frankly, in all that. and the fact that 25 days in, 25 days in, the malaysians finally say, you know, we might want some help from the u.s. navy, is extraordinary to me. why the u.s. hasn t been down there with an aircraft carrier, an additional land-based search aircraft, p 8s and p-3s i guess ....
