And for the first time, they did it with a championship. “It felt amazing, I think everyone was screaming,” said Cael Garvey, who earlier stood on top of the podium after a first-place finish at 195 pounds. “It means everything. It’s an amazing feeling to be up there for my friend and for my school.” Josh Wallington also finished first at 220 pounds as Mid-Prairie edged Alburnett for the title with 104 points to 103.5. “Last year we got second place in this tournament and this year to win it – It’s pretty exciting,” Mid-Prairie coach Justin Garvey said. ....

The first round saw bonus points in every match; other than Monticello’s Bo Kramer’s 14-5 major decision over Kaden Meader at 160 pounds, every match ended with a fall, five for the Golden Hawks and four for the Panthers. Mid-Prairie pinned four straight, starting with Jardin Mufaume’s fall in 1:52, coming after Mufaume built an early lead with a takedown and two-point near fall, giving the Golden Hawks their first team lead, 12-10. Then, falls by Ben Meader at 182 (1:44), Cael Garvey at 195 pounds (41 seconds), a Monticello forfeit at 220, and another pin from heavyweight Gannon Callahan (49 seconds) gave Mid-Prairie a commanding lead, 36-10, with six matches remaining. ....

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestling team is back inside the friendly confines of Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman tonight as they welcome Monticello and Iowa City Regina for a River Valley Conference triangular. The Golden Hawks have a 3-3 duel record coming in to night and are fresh off of a sixth place finish Saturday at the Jeremy Fulk Classic at New London. Over the weekend, the Golden Hawks were led by Mose Yoder, who captured his first career tournament championship at 113lbs. Last year at this event, Mid-Prairie beat Regina 52-21 and fell to Monticello 48-36. Regina comes into tonight with an overall record of 2-0, opening the season with duel wins over Bellevue and Cascade last Thursday. The Regals have one ranked wrestler in their lineup with Aidan Udell at No. 6 at 170lbs according to the latest rankings from thepredicament.com.
