'A plague planet' and other amazing shots from the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards


The internationally acclaimed Sony World Photography Awards, one of the world’s leading free photography competitions, is now in its 14th year. Recently, the judges released the best submissions they received across multiple categories, from wildlife and architecture to sports and portraits.
More than 100 photographers were shortlisted for the competition alongside the category winners, with the latter now considered for the overall title and a $5,000 prize. Here are some of our favorites.

Craig Easton’s winning Bank Top series, which challenges the representation and misrepresentation of communities in northern England
Craig Easton has also been awarded in the Portraiture category for his series Bank Top – which he created in partnership with writer Abdul Aziz Hafiz. The black and white images concentrate on the Bank Top neighbourhood in Blackburn, as a way of exploring the representation of communities in the north of England. The imagery was born from an initiative by Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery, set up to challenge reports of the town as the most segregated in the UK. Easton and Hafiz spent a year on the project, working closely with locals to create texts to accompany the portraits. ....

Sony World Photography Awards 2021 Professional Competition Finalists and Shortlists Announced


The World Photography Organisation is pleased to reveal the finalist and shortlisted photographers in the Professional competition for the Sony World Photography Awards 2021. Now in its 14th year, the Awards’ Professional competition rewards a remarkable body of work for technical excellence and a fresh perspective on contemporary subjects.
The winner of Photographer of the Year 2021 will be selected from the group of Professional finalists and revealed on the 15 April. To mark the occasion a specially commissioned program featuring the winners and hosted by art historian Jacky Klein and entertainer Nish Kumar will be available to stream via the World Photography Organisation digital platforms on the 15 April. ....
