Vaccine demand falling in Florida Keys as half get at least one jab


As reports of slipping demand for COVID-19 vaccines emerged across the state and nation in recent weeks, health officials say Monroe County is no different and that the initial rush on the vaccine has waned.
Dr. Mark Whiteside, medical director with the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County, said the number of people coming in for the vaccine has “absolutely” gone down from the first few months it was available. He said in the early days, vaccines were very limited in the county and demand was high.
“We couldn’t get enough of it,” Whiteside said.
But at a vaccine site run by the local health department in Marathon, Whiteside said one day recently no one came in to get vaccinated and other sites are doing less business as well. ....

Four-way contest set for Flat Rock election in fall
There will be a four-way race for three seats on the Flat Rock City Council in the fall general election, while Mayor Mark Hammond will be running unopposed.
Four candidates, including two incumbents, filed to run for three four-year council seats that expire this year. Tuesday was the deadline for filing nominating petitions to run for office. The candidates have until today to withdraw their names so they won’t appear on the ballot for the Nov. 3 election, Clerk Shane Anne Harrison said.
Vying for the seats are Mayor Pro Tempore Jim Martin and Councilman John Bergeron. Also running are Larry Dishaw, a former building and safety director for the city, and Steve Beller, a former council member. Both Dishaw and Beller also serve on the city planning commission and board of review, respectively. ....
