NEW DELHI: Senior IPS officer Mohammed Jawed Akhtar, who was posted as DG, Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards at the Centre, on Friday succumbed to Covid-19. He is the first serving DG-level officer to die of coronavirus infection.
Akhtar, 59, was due to retire in July this year. As per a PTI report, he was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi after testing positive for Covid-19 and breathed his last early on Friday.
Only last month, former DG of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Arun Choudhary had died of Covid. Even former CBI director Ranjit Sinha’s death last month is believed to have been caused by Covid-related complications.

Delhi Police says probe against COVID good samaritans due to court order
The Delhi Police has clarified that it has questioned certain politicians who were providing assistance to citizens in need was in keeping with a court order. The police said that sensationalism in reporting these matters should be avoided.
Earlier there was a social media outcry after Indian Youth Congress leader Srinivas BV was called in for questioning. Srinivas had been actively providing assistance to COVID patients in need of beds, oxygen cylinders, remdesivir jabs and other supplies at a time when the pandemic had rendered these essentials in short supply. BJP leader Gautam Gambhir was also among those questioned.
