Frontiers | Behaviour drives contemporary evolution in a failing insect-parasitoid importation biological control programme

Biological control of pests continues to become more important in agriculture as pesticides are being withdrawn. However, successful control can be compromised by contemporary evolution. Recent work in New Zealand has shown that the once-successful biological control programme of the sexually-reproducing grassland weevil pest Listronotus bonariensis by the asexual parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae has now failed. In order to explain the mechanisms associated with this, weevil parasitism rates were intensively monitored between 1994 and 2019. Frequent sampling took place at widely-dispersed New Zealand sites spanning the warmer northern regions to the cooler south. Based on elapsed heat accumulation above the parasitoid’s development temperature threshold of 10.2oC (DD), the results over c. 25 years indicated that the extent of parasitism decline at a given location was directly related to the accumulated DD. The latter, in turn, was taken to be indicative of parasitoid activity and se ....

Cureus | Salt as a Trigger for Atrial Tachycardia/Fibrillation

A variety of potential triggers of atrial fibrillation (AF) have been reported, including alcohol consumption, caffeine, exercise, and stress. Vagal AF triggers include gastrointestinal factors such as the amount of food consumed, types of foods, and gas and bloating. In this case report, detailed data of seven dietary and behavioral factors (many vagal) believed to be possible atrial tachycardia (AT) or AF triggers in a single patient with paroxysmal AT/AF were recorded. Episodes of AT and AF were recorded in the patient using a Medtronic loop recorder and analyzed by a cardiac electrophysiologist. To evaluate these potential triggers of AT/AF events, a general linear model with binomial family error distribution was used to fit the data. Then, a stepAIC function from the MASS package in R was used to perform a stepwise model selection using AIC (Akaike information criterion). The analysis only identified the amount of salt intake and the use of polyethylene glycol 3350 as predictor ....

Frontiers | Deer Exclusion Regenerates Native Plant Functional Responses, but Not Species Richness in an Eastern Serpentine Savannah

Plants are particularly vulnerable to physical disturbance in low productivity areas, due to the high energetic cost of replacing lost tissue. In the eastern United States, serpentine savannahs are fragmented ecosystems with high concentrations of rare endemic plant species, low concentrations of soil nutrients, and severe deer overpopulation. This study assessed the recovery of flowering plants in a serpentine savannah when deer were excluded. Plant count, flower count, vegetative area, and plant height of 10 serpentine plant species were compared inside and outside of deer exclusion structures throughout an entire growing season. Throughout the growing season and across the plant community, deer exclusion consistently increased values for all plant response traits measured. Species that responded most strongly to deer exclusion included Arabis lyrata (Brassicaceae, the wide ranging lyre-leaf rockcress) and the serpentine near-endemic Symphyotrichum depauperatum (a serpentine aster kn ....
