Mobile sewer overflows release almost 500K gallons

Saturday’s storms in south Alabama caused sewer overflows in 16 locations in the Mobile area, releasing about 480,000 gallons of untreated sewage, according to the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System.
The Mobile water utility said the overflows were caused when rainwater entered aging sewer pipes, and that projects are underway to update the old sewer lines to reduce overflows.
The overflows totaled an estimated 479,875 gallons, with one estimate unavailable.
Dr. Bernard H. Eichold II, Health Officer for the Mobile County Health Department, advises area residents to take precautions when encountering any standing water that may have accumulated because of these overflows. Those who have come into direct contact with untreated ....
