The Department of Environment (DoE) Chattogram region fined 15 businesses Tk 8.51 lakh for violating the environment conservation act.
The fine was imposed on them after a hearing at DoE Khulsi office today.
Mohammad Moazzom Hossain director of DoE Chattogram region told The Daily Star that Mehrin Ship Recycling at Sitakunda was fined Tk one lakh for violation of conditions stipulated on the clearance certificate.
Two brick kilns one from Ramu upazila and another from Bashkhali upazila were fined a total of Tk 4,50,000 lakh while a fish landing centre adjacent to Karnaphuli river was fined Tk one lakh for running their operation without DoE clearance, he added. ....

AKM Bahauddin Bahar, lawmaker of Cumilla-6 constituency, threatened an official of Department of Environment (DoE) with dire consequences after she inspected a hill-cutting project by Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and prepared a damage assessment report.
Shawkat Ara Koli, deputy director of DoE Cumilla office, inspected the spot at Sadar (south) upazila where two contracting firms M/S Hasan Techno Builders and M/S Haque Enterprise that have close ties with MP Bahar, were found flattening around 1,14,000 cubic feet of hill to expand the existing road under a project of Roads and Highways Department, reports our Chattogram correspondent. ....

The Department of Environment (DoE) today demolished three brick kilns for illegally operating in Chattogram s Lohagara upazila.
The DoE of Chattogram region demolished Petanshah Brick, Khawaza Brick and Baro Awlia Brick kilns in line with an earlier High Court direction.
The brick kilns had been running for a decade without any clearance certificate from DoE or approval from district administration, said Mohammad Moazzom Hossain, director of DoE Chattogram region. ....
