LEESBURG One resident of Lake County and one from Sumter were among the state’s latest reported deaths attributed to COVID-19, according to Tuesday’s update from the Florida Department of Health. The reported fatalities raise the area’s death toll to 382, including 275 residents of Lake County and 107 from Sumter.  Details about each local death was not immediately available, due to the state transitioning to a new method of reporting deaths on the DOH website. DOH offices in Tallahassee and Lake County have not responded to emails seeking information about the local deaths.  Tuesday’s reported deaths accompanied 166 new confirmed cases in Lake and Sumter counties 136 in Lake County and 30 in Sumter. Since March, when the DOH began issuing daily updates on the spread and impact of COVID-19, Lake County has reported 12,571 confirmed cases and officials in Sumter have confirmed 4,067 cases.

7 local deaths reported in recent COVID updates

LEESBURG Seven area residents were among the state’s latest reported deaths attributed to COVID-19, according to the Florida Department of Health. The fatalities, which occurred in the last three available reporting cycles Friday, Saturday and Sunday raise the area’s death toll to 373, including 271 residents of Lake County and 102 from Sumter.  Details about each local death was not immediately available, due to the state transitioning to a new method of reporting deaths on the DOH website. Neither DOH  office in Tallahassee or Lake County have responded to emails seeking information about the local deaths.  The most-recent deaths accompanied an increase of 615 confirmed cases in Lake and Sumter counties, combined, in the latest updates. Since March, when the DOH began issuing daily updates on the spread and impact of COVID-19, Lake County has reported 12,291 confirmed cases and officials in Sumter have confirmed 4,015 cases.

More than 200 new COVID cases reported in Lake, Sumter

It was the highest number of confirmed cases in a single day in Florida since July. Locally, 160 new confirmed cases were reported Thursday in Lake County, while Sumter added 49. Since the DOH began issuing daily updates on the spread and impact of COVID-19 in March, Lake has reported 11,798 cases and officials in Sumter County have reported 3,893 confirmed cases.  Thursday’s one-day rate of positivity was 9.48% in Lake County and 7.64% in Sumter. That represents an increase of 0.70% in Lake and a decrease of 3.06% in Sumter from Wednesday’s positivity rates.
