MILLVILLE A man known to many here only as Catman wandered the city for more than 40 years, from the Maurice River banks to the downtown and to a cemetery, sometimes fishing or resting under a riverfront tree.
Because he kept mostly to himself, many never knew much of Catman, where he laid his head at night, whether he held a job or the struggles of his life.
When he died, few knew his real story.
Born in 1918, John W. Dayton fought in the U.S. Army in the North African campaign during World War II. After returning home from war, Dayton worked periodically as a landscaper.
