Upstate and Western New York Fishing Report – January 28, 2021 Bill Hilts, Jr. We had a little blast of winter that blanketed Niagara Falls USA with up to 5 inches of the white stuff on Tuesday. Some cold temperatures are in the forecast and we may see some more snow by the weekend. The cold temperatures are locking up the smaller streams and your only tributary option may be Fisherman’s Park at Burt Dam in the Town of Newfane. Jigs, jigs tipped with a wax worm, egg sacs or egg imitations like beads are all good options if you fish there. Ice anglers are also waiting for Wilson and Olcott to lock up. Make sure you take all the necessary precautions if you see ice cover and want to give it a try. ....
Upstate and Western New York Fishing Report – January 21, 2020 Eastern Finger Lakes / Central New York Fishing Report Mike Crawford of upstateguideservice.com Ice anglers are getting out in many parts of the state but conditions vary from region to region. In the Adirondacks ice thickness varies from five to 10 inches. Heavy snowfall this past weekend in some parts of the North Country has made ice travel difficult…and in many places unsafe.
Lakes with flowing water, like many of the flows of the Adirondacks have varying ice thickness. They can be dangerous even when the bays are thick with over a foot of ice. Now with a foot or more of snow resting on slush on top of thin ice, extreme caution is required. ....
Upstate and Western New York Fishing Report – January 14, 2020 Mike Crawford of upstateguideservice.com Since last report the ice thickness in The North Country has increased only slight. Photo courtesy Upstate Guide Service In the Adirondacks the ice is only slightly thicker and in some places still under six inches in thickness. A blanket of snow that fell on January 2nd left a foot of powder on top of four to five inches of black ice. ....
Upstate and Western New York Fishing Report – January 7, 2020 Mike Crawford of upstateguideservice.com The ice fishing is coming on slowly this season. Mild temperatures have not made the ice grow and the few locations in New York State with safe ice are seeing tremendous pressure. Photo by Upstate Guide Service Fishing has seen a great resurgence in popularity. And nothing could be better than beginners taking up the pastime of angling and getting outside engaging nature. People getting into ice fishing for the first time should, however, use extreme caution. Photo by Upstate Guide Service There is little room for error or poor judgement when inexperienced find themselves traveling the frozen surface of a lake or pond. Uniform ice of a minimum of five inches thick is required before I will lead anglers to ice fish. ....
Upstate New York Fishing Report – December 24, 2020 Bill Hilts, Jr. Christmas is near and if you have been a good boy or girl this year, you may be receiving some new hunting and fishing gear to play with this week. Fishing on the lower Niagara River has been good of late and hopefully, that will continue to hold up if you are looking for some place to go. Bear in mind that there is a winter storm watch for most of Western NY but Niagara County is not part of that forecast. However, the effects of wind, rain and snow could have an impact on water conditions in the river. ....
