grandmother of the three kids, along with a family friend decided to check on the family. around 10:00 they showed up at the house. doors were bolted locked. she went in there a window, found all five family members shot to death. the gun used also found inside the house, according to the sheriff. there s been a domestic situation between the husband and wife. our investigation up to this point would lead us to believe that the crime was committed by one of the adults. right now that focuses mainly on mr. washington himself. such a violent end to those young lives. it s leaving family members with a lot of questions tonight. the biggest, just why did this happen? we are just beginning our coverage in culpeper tonight. we re piecing together the timeline for you. how things added up to where we are now. we ll introduce you to a family member who is extremely close to the situation. she will explain some of the stresses she thinks might have contributed to what folks here a

this isn t even the reason we re here. this has been going on for a couple of months, but if you look behind us here where those cones are you can see where there s a fresh patch, and that is the source of the problem. the problem that was discovered earlier this week, that was sort of found earlier today, but it had an adverse affect on rock creek. reporter: 1,200 gallons isn t a lot of water compared to all that flows through rock creek, but 1,200 gallons of raw sewage in rock creek is very serious. it was untreated. compared to the spills that we sometimes have of combined sewage, which would be diluted with storm water. reporter: it start earlier this week. a problem with the sewer line that had been in place since 1885. there s already major work going on in the area. then came the blockage. they used pumps like this to bypass that blockage until it could be repaired. they finally got rid of whatever it was in the pipes going down the sidewalks that were some flu
