by Mike Ferguson | Presbyterian News Service LOUISVILLE — The Presbyterian Writers Guild has selected three winners from among 20 entries in its first-ever Ash Wednesday writing contest. Ruth Linnea Whitney won the grand prize, $100, for her poem, “Ash Season.” Whitney is a member of First Presbyterian Church in Port Townsend, Washington. Jane Kurtz, winner of the 2020 David Steele Distinguished Writer Award; and Caroline Kurtz, winner of the Best First Book Award for the best first book by a Presbyterian author written during 2018-2019, judged both the poetry and liturgy entries. GenOn Ministries, whose mission is to “nurture, grow and deepen intergenerational Christ-centered community,” hosted the hour-long webinar, which attracted nearly 30 participants separated by more than 4,900 miles but united by the task of providing meaningful worship, fellowship and other ministry to parishioners stuck in their homes on Sunday.

Spenser Darden LOUISVILLE — What started off as an initiative of the adult Sunday school class at First Presbyterian Church in Morgantown, West Virginia, has grown to a wider community-based effort now called Dismantling Racism Together. During a session last week, a group of about 30 people, including several from the church, heard from someone who dismantles racism as part of his work — J. Spenser Darden, director of Diversity Initiatives and Community Engagement at West Virginia University. “Disruptors are seen as negative,” Darden said early on in their online session together. “But by not disrupting, you’re serving as the problem.”
