The Tiny Michigan Town of Alamo: Was it Named After "the" Alamo?

The little hamlet of Alamo was settled in 1841 and sits smack dab in the center of Alamo Township, Kalamazoo County.
It was created as a post office and railroad station on the Kalamazoo & South Haven (later the Michigan Central) Railroad. Since it was a post office located in the center of the township, the area was dubbed “Alamo Centre P.O.” After a few years the “P.O.” was dropped, and eventually just shortened to “Alamo” by the early 1900s.
Most-asked question: was the town & township actually named after THE Alamo in Texas? Answer: yes, it was. The settlers had originally chosen a different name, Bainbridge , but since there was already a Bainbridge in Berrien County, that suggestion was dropped. ....

The Haunted 1850 Catholic Cemetery, Marquette

The Haunted 1850 Catholic Cemetery, Marquette
This historic old graveyard has been around ever since 1850, even though no one has been buried there since approximately 1900.
In 1861, this little patch of graveyard land, which sits at the corner of Pioneer Road and Division Street, was donated to Reverend Frederic Baraga with the strict specifications that the land was to ONLY be used for
free burial ground and for no other purpose .
But the graveyard was filling up with little burial ground left. Then in 1897, along comes the new Holy Cross Cemetery, whose caretakers coaxed the church parishioners to dig up their dead and move em to the new grounds. Some locals were talked into it, while others refused, leaving their deceased family and friends to stay where they were. ....

The Lost Michigan Lumber Village of Nogi

The Lost Michigan Lumber Village of Nogi
Someone recently asked me about the location of an old lumber town by the name of Nogi. It took some doing, but I was able to locate it s former site.
This particular gentleman told me his grandfather was born in Nogi, and recalls seeing a road sign for it. The road signs to Nogi are gone, as are any proof that the town even existed.there seems to be absolutely nothing left.
Nogi was a logging town approximately five miles north of Moran in Mackinaw County, between two little bodies of water: Bissell Creek and the Carp River. It is southeast of another tiny town by the name of Kenneth; while Kenneth still shows up on maps, Nogi does not. Timber was cut and hauled by the nearby Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad, which cut through Nogi. ....
