The Oldest, Still-Surviving Building in Michigan

The Oldest, Still-Surviving Building in Michigan
There are a good handful of centuries-old Michigan structures still around.but the one believed to be the oldest one, still in use, is the Officers’ Stone Quarters in Fort Mackinac, built in 1780.
Fort Michilimackinac (in Mackinaw City) was the original military fort in the area, but once the British got control, they disassembled the fort and built a new one on Mackinac Island. Perched atop the island s limestone cliffs, the new fort – now named Fort Mackinac - contained a brand new officers quarters with limestone walls four feet thick.
The U.S. got control of the island and the fort after the war, lost it to the British during the War of 1812, and thanks to a treaty, got it back again in 1815. Out of all fourteen historic fort structures, the Officers’ Stone Quarters now contains a kids museum, tea room, and restaurant. ....

Hartwellville didn t have much to begin with, except for a school and post office. It was mainly a postal station and became the first to go.
Newburg first settled by Hosea Baker in 1833, was named after Newburgh-on-the Hudson, New York, the hometown of another early settler, Dr. Nicholas Harder. It showed some promise with a mill along the Shiawassee River and a good amount of shops. Today it s mostly residences. ....

This is the Sixth Oldest Village in Michigan

This is the Sixth Oldest Village in Michigan
According to
Almont s web page, Daniel Black bought up some land and constructed the first house – log cabin – on what is now Main Street.
The village became established the following year (1834) under the name “Newburg”. The village name was forever changed in January 1846 as “Almont”, after Mexican diplomat General Juan Almonte.
After 1865, Almont really took off. People were coming into Michigan from other states just to live in Almont, thanks to the inexpensive price of $1.25 per acre of land.
