Petitions seek to remove Custer s name from county
Debate over the legacy of Gen. George Armstrong Custer and whether it should be imprinted in the fabric of the community is continuing to make its way through the regional discourse.
A series of petitions calling for the removal of Custer’s name from various landmarks and entities throughout Monroe County are circulating on Change.org, an online advocacy platform.
Launched earlier this week by Monroe Charter Township resident Katybeth Davis, three petitions are calling for Custer Airport, Custer Road, and Custer Baseball/Softball League to be renamed.
The petitions allege Custer’s actions during the American Indian Wars targeted Native Americans, resulting in the deaths of innocent men, women, and children.
