S.F. City College students, faculty protest impending massive cuts to classes and teachers

City College of San Francisco students and faculty are planning to protest against major cuts to the school’s staff on Thursday night. The proposed cuts follow reports that City College is at risk of insolvency and a takeover by the state because it hasn’t cut its payroll enough to compensate for a huge loss of students.
The demonstration is part of continued pushback to the impending budget cuts, and comes just a few weeks before City College’s trustees are set to vote on cuts to full-time faculty on May 10. Last month, officials sent out 163 layoff warnings to full-time teachers, and expect to lay off an additional 447 part-time teachers for next fall, slashing hundreds of c ....

Rife with infighting, Oakland community college district at risk of losing local control


An Oakland-based community college district may soon be forced to cede power to the state if its Board of Trustees can’t quell concerns about its ability to properly govern the district. 
Intervening at the Peralta Community College District, home to four East Bay colleges serving almost 30,000 students, would be a drastic step. Only twice previously has the state chancellor’s office and the systemwide Board of Governors assumed power from a locally-elected governing board: At the City College of San Francisco in 2013 and at Compton College in 2004.
The colleges in Peralta, one of 73 districts in California’s vast 116 community college system, are Laney College and Merritt College in Oakland, Berkeley City College and the College of Alameda.  ....
