We begin on the streets of minneapolis with nbcs shaquille brewster. What has happened since those charges were announced and what is the situation there tonight . Reporter lawrence, a major step forward for anyone who wanted those charges, especially the people here, who since george floyd died at this intersection, theyve come out night after night, sometimes staying overnight. When the charnels weges were an, there was chanting, cheering, songs, prayer. Youre still seeing it now. Sometimes it is somber, sometimes it is exciting. Right now youre seeing people pay their respects in the foreground. Flowers all around. People have notes they come with. They bring their kids, their families. All to pay respects. When that moment came, when the announcement was made, thats when you saw the reaction. It almost turned into a celebratory mood and thats what youre feeling right now as people are milling about, having those conversations and reflecting when they can. Ill tell you, one thing we
These two stories, and youve done a brilliant job, i think, of pulling these two stories together in your hour. It has been such a struggle to keep some kind of focus on coronavirus. Especially as we see these giant crowds assembling, which could all be, well know at the ends of june, what has happened with all that. The possibilities in the protests for infection. Our friend and colleague chris hayes closed out his hour as he tossed to me by saying straight to camera, if you in america have been to one of these protests and youve been around other people, whether or not you were wearing a mask, if you have access to testing, it is a good idea to get tested. I will reiterate to say what he said there. It is good to see people in masks, so many of them at these events, and nobody is going to try to floud the guidelines or deny the coronavirus is serious. But we have to look out for each other and that means encouraging everybody who has been at one of these events to get tested. This is
Governor and his handling of it. There is great distrust of the entire system top to bottom. There is a sense that something is different now, that the story that we did yesterday here at the capital where we saw thousands upon thousands, mostly young people, but old, young, black, white, latino, native american, asian, coming together in huge numbers, that people in the movement here have never seen before. Theyve never seen that sort of sensibility. The suburbs, some of these marches that weve been in, theyve marched out to areas where you have very big, very grand, very suburban homes and there are people out front there, expressing their support for whats happening here. So i think that there is weve covered a lot of these things and there does feel to be Something Different here, that that videotape was so shocking at its very core that an officer for eight minutes and 46 seconds could sit on the neck, knee the neck of that individual with his hand in his pocket, as casually as he
