Analyst and nonresident senior fellow for the atlantic council s eurasia center, michael bosacu. sorry if i mispronounced your name. my apologies in advance. want to get to the matter of what s going on in ukraine. today marks six months of russia s war in ukraine. what s your assessment of the situation that so far in the war effort? where do you see the fighting heading in the near future? is there an actual off ramp? sure. well, good to be with you. well, let s not forget that this war actually started eight years ago in 2014 when russia illegally annexed crimea and sent russian-thugs into the donbas. the destruction, the loss of life, the displacement has been incalculable. in the process, mr. putin, weaponized migration, energy and food. i think the ukrainians right now are feeling quite good on this independence day in terms of what they ve been able to achieve n terms of how far ....
They ve been able to beat back the russians. in fact, mr. zelenskyy last night kind of hinted that crimea is not off the table. that ukraine could also try and reclaim that. so, with the capability, you referenced the new aid package from the united states, with those new capabilities, those high-tech weapons, ukraine will be able to strike more accurately and further. as to an off ramp, most analysts are saying today including the former uk ambassador to russia, they would be surprised if the war ended this year. but it has to end soon. again, because of the loss of life and destruction and displacement. michael, i want to pick up on what you said about crimea. the conventional wisdom the attacks were an effort to soften putin up, to cut bait and get home, make a diplomatic end to the deal. your assessment is that there is actually a play that zelenskyy could make to recapture some of that territory that was taken in 2014? ....
