The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970. Nowadays, happenings are sprinkled throughout April and combined with other events, such as National Park Week. Many people (I’m one of them) believe that every day is Earth Day. So give some thought to how you want to mark the day because climate change is the defining environmental threat of our time. Here are eight events not to miss.

1. President Biden and 40 world leaders will discuss climate change and you’re invited. In case you haven’t been following along, President Biden rejoined the Paris Agreement (a 2016 international treaty that seeks to limit global warming) on the first day he was in office. Later, Biden set a time for leaders to join him in an international summit “to galvanize efforts by the major economies to tackle the climate crisis,” according to a White House statement. Kristen Tate camps a lot. The freelance book editor from San Francisco takes car camping trips for two weeks every summer, during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and often on weekends. She knows it s tricky to make reservations for campgrounds in California, especially when you re looking for popular sites during the peak summer season.
If I want something for a very desirable weekend, I plan ahead, Tate said. I either get that six-month window when [reservations] open, or I just don t worry and wait for a two-week window right before. I start looking then because that s when people start canceling. ....

April events: Outdoor light show, nature challenge, cherry blossoms

Welcome to The Wild! At last, something to do on Saturday night that doesn’t involve Netflix. For just one night, a forest will appear in downtown Los Angeles, part of an outdoor digital light show called “Luminex: Dialogues of Light.”
At one site, look for a building-size projection of trees from different perspectives, one looking down on lush canopies, the other looking up from the intricate root system. Japanese artist Akiko Yamashita’s artwork is inspired by her grandfather, who committed himself to planting trees in landscapes left empty after World War II.

Turkish artist Refik Anadol has also created a pop-up natural wonder for the city. His work transforms “the invisible patterns of wind in and around L.A. into a series of poetic data sculptures and projects them on the facade of the Desmond building in downtown L.A.,” an online statement says. ....

Every Sunday at 2 p.m., a group of community members meets (in a socially distanced manner) on the corner of Folsom and Indiana streets, near the invisible boundary between East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights, to discuss the future of a bunya pine tree.
The tree El Pino, as it s affectionately known by the community is well known for its role in the 1993 crime drama “Blood In, Blood Out,” but to the people of East L.A. it has more communal significance than international recognition. This is where people come together. ....
