Scrapping the new Therapeutic Products Act will leave thousands of New Zealanders exposed to ongoing harm from dodgy medical devices, warn patient safety advocates and legal experts.
“She is absolutely beside herself. She’s exhausted – as anybody would be in her situation, and she’s terrified she’s just going to be left there. “She’s too scared to ask for any help, if something goes wrong she’s not going to be able to afford it, so what’s she going to do?”

Gynaecologist and specialist pain medicine physician Dr Karen Joseph and clinical psychologist Dr Jessica Mills have written in support of Mahoney’s application. “Glenys story is an example of the incredible suffering that people with mesh injuries are enduring,” they wrote.
Exhausted and distraught, Mahoney was forced to cancel her flights. She was admitted to a nearby hospital overnight Tuesday. Friends and family were extremely concerned about Mahoney being on her own in such a vulnerable situation. Charlotte Korte, from advocacy group Mesh Downunder, said she was appalled by how Mahoney had been treated. Auckland-based urologist Dr Eva Fong also spoke out for her former patient. “I supported her to travel to seek a procedure with Dr Dionysios Veronikis [in the US] both because of the technical difficulty and because I believed this was most likely to ensure this was her final mesh removal surgery.
