How have you been. We call ourselves partners in crime. That we are not going to talk about the crime part of it, just to the partner part. What has been interesting since ive been in the position of library of congress is the fact that people ask me what does the National Archives do. What does the archivist do a and then theres a confusion around the history and the role of each of the institutions, and ive learned a lot about that even in coming up to reclaim the declaration of independence, the bill of rights. We call it the constitution. And that was held by the library of congress and the type of thing. It wasnt until the 1930s the United States got serious about its records. Iwas Franklin Roosevelt was passionate about records and that we actually created and he signed the legislation that created the archives. So the mexican expedition and the border itself really needs to be understood in the context of the mexican revolution, and thats a conflict that begins in 1910 with the ouster of the longstanding dictator diaz who is ousted by morero and hes killed soon afterwards and after hes killed several revolutionary faxes emerge from that and one of the faxes is under veentsia carranza and one of the people involved with that is franz copancho villa. Carranza and his constitutionalists have become successful. They managed a large part of the country and at this point of success pancho villa breaks with the constitutionalists and hes successful militarily. He goes from having an army thats about 30,000 to 50,000 people operating mostly in the north of mexico, mostly in the chihuahua to having about 5,001 troops under his command and its sort of a low point in his military career that he decides to start attacking americans at the border. We say center because theres two fabulous entities here, the federal entity is the Library Museum which is where you are now and a few feet away is the Carter Center which is an ngo. Together president carter looks at us as the center. We provide him with data, research, camaraderie, advice and we work really, really hard for him as well. The refugee act is an amendment to the earlier immigration and nationality act and the migration of the refugee assistant act. The goal was to provide permanent and consistent admission to people who were suffering in other nations and to provide asylum. That was the whole point of it. With rich insights, and what i think many of us like so much, and that is a good thing because his work is so good, you want to succumb to jealousy but you just cant because he is such a wonderful guy. He is a fantastic teacher as well. Many of us have worked with him over the years, at the university of georgia, he is not only a terrific scholar, he has written or edited six books, my favorite is all the makes of man, love, ambition, and the civil war south, that was his dissertation done sometime ago at the university of north carolina. William varney was his advisor, who is still there, another book that i would highly recommend, that he edited, a fantastic book called, wielding the war stories from the civil wars ragged edge.
