The public has re-elected Labour’s Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram as Mayor of Greater Manchester and Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, respectively, and now they can serve a further three years in post.
The winning mayoral candidates were announced today after voters flocked to the polls on Thursday. This year’s elections saw landslide victories for the two mayors, with Burnham scooping up 473,024 of the votes – 67% of the total 702,784 cast – and Rotheram winnig 198,726 votes.
In Greater Manchester, Burnham was up against eight other candidates: Laura Evans (Conservatives); Simon Lepori (Liberal Democrats); Melanie Horrocks (Green Party); Marcus Farmer (Independent); Stephen Morris (English Democrats); Nick Buckley (Reform UK); Alec Marvel (Independent), and David Sutcliffe (Independent).

Play now The count in the Greater Manchester mayoral and Salford city mayor elections has taken place as Andy Burnham was re-elected in Greater Manchester and Paul Dennett in Salford.
The Greater Manchester election, which took place on Thursday, had originally been scheduled to take place last May - but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Counting of the ballot papers got underway on Saturday morning with the result announced this afternoon.
GREATER Manchester mayor candidate Andy Burnham has spoken about the need to break a ‘defensive, excuses culture’ among the region’s police force. Speaking on a visit to shops and the market in Westhoughton, six days before the mayoral election, Mr Burnham said the appointment of a new chief constable for Greater Manchester Police, Stephen Watson was intended to bring about a positive shift in the ‘culture and ethics’ of the force. Last year, GMP was placed in special measures after a damning inspection report found 80,000 crimes went unrecorded in a year. His Conservative opponent, Laura Evans said the force will be brought out of the measures under Tory leadership and wants the force to ‘get back to fighting crime’.

Mr Burnham popped into shops and businesses on Lee Lane to chat about the effects lockdown had on their businesses and how it feels to finally be back serving customers. Speaking during the visit he outlined that if re-elected the central theme for the next three years would be the public transport network for the region.
