Just Pondering: Oh, the many joys of relocation Poll Yes I’m writing this month’s column surrounded by a stack of boxes and wondering who pressed the fast-forward button on our life. Yes, as you guessed hubby and I pulled the trigger and are moving. Now the fun begins! I can honestly admit that the whole process of selling our home of 31 years was almost too easy. The hard part has been saying goodbye. Goodbye to just plain crazy “stuff.” Now, any of you who have embarked on this journey will agree that we should move every 10 years. It definitely has its merits. For one thing, you don’t convince yourself that every trinket is a diamond in the rough that could be featured on Antiques Roadshow. Also, you aren’t old and spend more time reminiscing than packing. ....
Laying It Out: Uniting just to win just means everyone loses Poll Yes “The lesson of Alberta’s 2015 and 2019 elections is that when conservatives are united, they win. When they aren’t, they lose. It’s up to the UCP caucus members to decide which it will be.” – Katy Merrifield, National Post op-ed Former communications director to Premier Jason Kenney, Katy Merrifield, is getting pretty outspoken within her new, non-government role as B.C. vice president for Wellington Advocacy, the highly active and suspiciously successful lobbyist group where all Kenney’s best pals seem to end up. True to form, she’s been making it known that the current United Conservative leader – the one who united conservatives in the first place – is not just the best man for the job, he’s the only man for the job. ....
Tensions have once again boiled over in the nearly century-long conflict between Israel and Palestine. Thousands of rockets have been launched by both sides: resulting in the obliteration of neighbourhoods and hundreds of innocent lives being lost. The events have spurred mass protests around the world, including in Canada. Like most protests nowadays, they are clear displays of bitter tribalism, with pro-Palestine demonstrations putting all the blame on Israel and vice versa. These demonstrations and much of the commentary surrounding this conflict are based on justifying the actions of whichever side they support and labelling the other side as evil. ....
Laying It Out: Unity like this was never going to last Poll Independent Medicine Hat News The formality of kicking two MLAs out of caucus simply makes official what all of Alberta has known for some time. There is nothing united about the United Conservative Party. When Todd Loewen resigned his position as caucus chair and asked Jason Kenney to resign his as premier, the news of dissent came weeks after the Central Peace-Notley MLA was one of 17 to publicly oppose newly imposed health orders. Reports since suggested the premier can’t even be in the same room with that group, nor they him, and that – not rising COVID cases – is what led to a legislature suspension of three weeks (and counting). ....
The first rule of Internet safety: Create a strong password! Creating strong passwords may seem like a daunting task, especially when the recommendation is to have a unique password for each site you visit. Anyone would be overwhelmed if they had to create and memorize multiple passwords like Yt9v-43QS53^rW. You may be using one identical password with your fingers crossed it won’t ever be compromised, thus exposing all your web information. Maybe you’re using several passwords that are short, simple words and include numbers that relate to your life, making your password easy to guess or hack. Maybe you do make hard to remember passwords and have a list of your passwords taped to the bottom of your keyboard, making it easy for someone to access your accounts. (I once did a keyboard flip at a call center I was managing and found out it was common for my agents to tape their passwords to the underside of their keyboard.). ....
