City Notebook: Alberta the ungovernable
Poll
Will you visit a business if they open in spite of health restrictions that say they can’t?
Yes
There are times when politicians point out the importance of debate and how a certain decision is “a great day for democracy.”
That’s more often than not a sure sign they’ve either lost said debate or suffered a great thumping but don’t want to say so.
That’s the split decision apparently suffered by Premier Jason Kenney this week, when new health restrictions were met by a near caucus revolt from 18 MLAs from the Wildrose shade of conservatives that he famously united before the 2019 election. ....

– Medicine Hat’s two MLAs were among 15 UCP colleagues to come out against health measures this week, just as doctors and scientists were once again pleading for diligence, and just as the more contagious, more deadly variant strains of COVID became dominant in Alberta.
– A new local restaurant and bar owner is promising to violate public health rules, is vehemently against mandatory vaccinations that don’t actually exist and is apparently a follower of QAnon (which, as was revealed this week, is just some dope named Ron). ....

The problem with jazz - Medicine Hat NewsMedicine Hat News

The problem with jazz
Poll
Do you agree with police and health authorities shutting down, fencing off Grace Life Church near Edmonton?
Yes
Truthfully there is no problem with jazz. Like it or not, jazz music has a long and rich legacy that tells the story of African pain being transformed into the majesty of the spirit expressed through sound. But you wouldn’t know that from the new curriculum proposed for Alberta’s elementary school students, whose music studies include the statement that “big band ensembles give jazz music a larger sound” as exemplified by music by Glenn Miller, and Mart Kenney, Premier Jason Kenney’s grandfather. Considering how generic it is and how much other vital information is left out, this statement is particularly gobsmacking. ....

City Notebook: Sometimes a joke is just a fool's game - Medicine Hat NewsMedicine Hat News

Beyond some morons on social media, it seems few took advantage of April Fools to try to score laughs about the coronavirus, which is something that shouldn’t be miraculous, but is these days.
One notable exception was the City of St. Albert, which announced residents should watch the early television broadcasts where they would be selecting via lottery ball machine which birth years would be eligible for additional doses of vaccine. Talk about brainless.
People are sick of the pandemic, and probably could use a laugh, but that’s not it.
Sherwood Park did the old motorized-trash-bin gag.
For the record, the News stopped April Fools in 2016 after a certain president of the United States made the idea of a fun, false and frivolous story in the media no fun for anyone. ....
