KiwiRail has recently ordered 10 new diesel “DL” class locomotives from CRRC Dalian in China, on top of the 63 that have already been purchased since 2009. Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMTU) General Secretary Wayne Butson says the standard view of the on the ground workforce at KiwiRail was the locomotives were very poor performers. That’s a view backed by KiwiRail’s own figures from 2020, that showed none of the engines met KiwiRail’s performance target of 80,000 kilometres Mean Distance Between Failure (MDBF) over the previous year. ....

According to commuter rail data from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), NJ Transit saw 351 total mechanical failures in 2019 while operating more than 61.6 million passenger car miles. A passenger car mile measures the number of miles rail passenger cars travel while in revenue service, including deadhead miles. In NJ Transit’s case, that equates to a breakdown every 175,535 miles. ....

Buses ranked eighth worst in the nation in 2019 and seventh worst among similar sized agencies, such as NYC Transit. The statistics, released this week in the Federal Transit Administration National Transit’s Database and based on numbers reported to the FTA annually by transit agencies, likely didn’t come as a shock to commuters. Before the coronavirus pandemic crushed public transit ridership in 2020, commuters regularly complained about being stuck on a platform, waiting for the little engine that couldn’t run. But NJ Transit officials say they are working to address issues that led to the poor rankings. ....
