Woman dies in Aitkin County following DWI charge

A 64-year-old woman died Sunday, April 4, just days after being charged with third-degree driving while intoxicated following an Aitkin County crash.
The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office responded at 11 a.m. March 30 to a report of a vehicle in the ditch in Beaver Township, southeast of McGregor.
The driver of the vehicle, Karen I. Maki, refused treatment from McGregor Ambulance staff. Maki exhibited signs of intoxication and emitted an odor of alcohol, the sheriff’s office reported. A preliminary breath test revealed an alcohol concentration level of 0.20%. Maki was subsequently arrested and transported to the Aitkin County Jail on charges of third-degree DWI.
The 20-year-old woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

MCGREGOR TWP A Minneapolis woman was injured when her vehicle went into the ditch Saturday, Jan. 9, in McGregor Township.
The Minnesota State Patrol reported Samara Nicole Palo, 20, was driving northbound on Highway 65 at Highway 210 just before 3:30 a.m. in her 2003 Honda CRV, when the vehicle traveled through the intersection and came to rest in a ditch.
Palo was transported to Riverwood Hospital in Aitkin via McGregor Ambulance, where she was treated for minor, non-life-threatening injuries. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the state patrol.
The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
