Lewes council in favor of annexation for microbrewery property

Friday, January 15, 2021
Lewes Mayor and City Council is in favor of annexation for the property at 1145 Savannah Road, near the crossing for the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail.
Christine Jones, owner and vice president of Jones Enterprise Brewing LLC and Lewes Brewing Company LLC, submitted the annexation application to city officials in December. The company intends to build a micro or nano brewery on the property with a small tasting room.
An ad hoc annexation committee comprising all members of council except Mayor Ted Becker found there were no downsides to bringing the property into the city. If it is ultimately annexed, the committee determined the appropriate zoning for the property is general commercial. However, before annexation can move forward, city code must be amended to allow for a microbrewery to be a permitted use within the general commercial zone.  ....

Police advise Delaware vacation home owners: Beware of squatters

Delaware News Journal
Imagine returning to your Delaware beach home to find that strangers had been living there – using your heat, water and cable for days.
This misfortune has been a familiar one for resort towns where many residents vacate their homes during the winter, only noticing that something is wrong when their electric bills spike or a neighbor calls about suspicious activity.
In towns like Dewey Beach, where most of its 2,000 homes are emptied in the winter, squatting or burglary incidents are an inherent risk, said Sgt. Cliff Dempsey, spokesperson for the Dewey Beach Police Department.
More recently, signs like increase bills or calls to law enforcement led Dewey Beach Police Department to investigate several burglaries in December and January. ....

Free parking a focus of Lewes committee

The challenge of parking in downtown Lewes isn’t limited to the metered areas.
For several months, the downtown business district parking committee has been brainstorming ways to encourage use of free parking areas just a bit farther from the business district.
Ideas include reconfiguring and beautifying the stoned parking lot at the corner of Schley Avenue and Franklin Avenue. The lot is along the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail about a quarter-mile from Second Street. From the lot, it’s a straight walk to Kings Highway and Zwaanendael Park. From there, Second Street is a block away.
There have been several issues raised about why the parking lot is underutilized. Besides the desire to park in front of the shop or restaurant a visitor wants to patronize, committee members have determined the lot’s appearance is problematic. For years, the lot has been used as a staging area for various construction projects, and it’s often filled with heavy equipment. ....

Vigil attendees stand for democracy

Thursday, January 14, 2021
More than 65 people stood in silent vigil for about a half-hour Jan. 10 along Savannah Road in Lewes. The masked group stood in two socially distanced rows, many with homemade signs, in support of democracy and the U.S. Constitution. The demonstration was held less than a week after a group of insurrectionists was unsuccessful in its attempt to stop the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral college victory at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The vigil was organized in part by the Rev. Canon Mark Harris of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Second Street in Lewes. Also involved in the demonstration were members of the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, and members of mayor and city council.  ....
