This misfortune has been a familiar one for resort towns where many residents vacate their homes during the winter, only noticing that something is wrong when their electric bills spike or a neighbor calls about suspicious activity. In towns like Dewey Beach, where most of its 2,000 homes are emptied in the winter, squatting or burglary incidents are an inherent risk, said Sgt. Cliff Dempsey, spokesperson for the Dewey Beach Police Department. More recently, signs like increase bills or calls to law enforcement led Dewey Beach Police Department to investigate several burglaries in December and January. ....
