The stage is set. Favourite Over The Horizon and longshot King Kong slayer Blue Star Mercury both won this past Saturday’s Western Canada Pacing Derby eliminations to advance to this Saturday’s prestigious and rich $110,710 Derby final at Century Mile.
A densely packed card of 11 races marked the Saturday (Sept. 23) afternoon hosted at Century Mile with the Alberta Sires Stakes (ABSS) headlining the action. Amid the stakes action, Shark Week broke through to win his 10th race in a row while Virtual Horizon posted his 12th win in a row.
Century Downs track record holder Shark Week turned in another speedy performance on Friday evening (July 7) to earn his sixth straight victory in the $14,000 Preferred Handicap Pace, fighting off rivals on both sides to the finish.
It was a Saturday afternoon that went smooth as silk for trainer Nathan Sobey, who watched four of his students find their way to victory lane during the 12-race card at Century Downs.
Nate Sobey trainee Divine Art ran up the score at Century Mile on Saturday night (Dec. 3), notching a 12th consecutive victory when taking the $112,910 Century Casinos Pace in 1:54.2.
