La Ronge conservation officers dealing with black bears in residential areas
Black bears and the overturned garbage bins where they’ve found their meals, have been recently spotted throughout a La Ronge residential area.
And conservation officers have been dealing with the unwanted visitors.
Matthew Tokaruk, a black bear biologist with the Ministry of Environment, said the goal is to have bears move out of town themselves by cutting off the food supply.
“When conservation officers do have to get involved, they’ll employ a few different methods hazing bears when possible and then trapping when needed as well.”
Hazing means officers will attempt to make the bears’ stay as uncomfortable as possible, such as by using screamers to make a loud noise and scare it off. ....

A pilot working for the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency Wildfire Management Branch captured a video of a bear coming up to his van near the Buffalo Narrows airport early Wednesday.
On his way to work, Pervez Iqbal, 77, saw something that looked like a bear in the distance on the side of the road. When he got closer, he parked to watch it graze and took some photos of it.
“Then all of a sudden the bear made eye contact with me and decided to investigate me,” said Iqbal. The bear came towards his vehicle and put its two front paws on the hood. ....

Pet food, bird seed, and compost bins are just a few of the items that attract bears to an area, and the Ministry of Environment is asking residents to keep that in mind as the animals emerge from hibernation.
Matthew Tokaruk, Saskatchewan’s black bear population manager, said it’s difficult to track how often bears search human habitats for food, but conservation officers did receive an unusually high number of calls about the problem in 2020.
On Monday, Tokaruk asked residents to be more careful about what they leave outside rural homes and cabins to help cut down on those interactions. ....
