Labour's Abbott and Burgon join trade unionists' demands for a zero-Covid approach

Industrial reporter
LABOUR MPs Diane Abbott and Richard Burgon joined trade unionists, academics and activists on Saturday to demand a “Covid-zero” approach to suppressing the pandemic.
They spoke at the virtual launch of the Zero Covid Campaign, a group advocating tougher policies aimed at eliminating, as opposed to managing, coronavirus.
Short, sharp lockdowns alongside efficient test, trace and isolate policies have seen many south-east Asian and Pacific Rim countries keep deaths and economic disruption to a minimum.
Former shadow home secretary Ms Abbott said: “We’re seeing 1,000 people die every day. We’ve almost become numb to those figures, but they represent lives snuffed out. ....

Inadequate Covid health and safety policy is placing workers at unnecessary risk

Industrial reporter
WORKERS have been placed at significant and unnecessary risk by inadequate Covid health and safety policy, a leading trade unionist said on Saturday.
Janet Newsham, chairwoman of the National Hazards campaign and a TUC tutor, argued that workers had been let down by the government, employers and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
She was speaking during the online launch of the Zero Covid Campaign, a group fighting for tougher policies to combat coronavirus.
Ms Newsham said: “The pandemic didn’t cause the occupational health crisis, it exposed it.
“Health and safety law enforcement and trade union organisations have been attacked and undermined by deregulatory neoliberal governments of all shades.  ....

Bakers' union BFAWU launch consultation over Labour disaffiliation

Industrial Reporter
FOOD workers’ union BFAWU launched a consultation on whether to disaffiliate from the Labour Party today.
The union’s 20,000 members are being asked to contribute to virtual branch discussions ahead of an executive committee decision to be taken in May before the June annual conference.
BFAWU, which regularly donates to Labour, has been at the heart of grassroots campaigns for workers’ rights including the “McStrike” campaign for fair pay and conditions at McDonalds.
Following Unite’s decision last year to reduce its donations to the party, it is a sign of the growing disconnect between Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour leadership and ordinary working people. ....
