Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked the nation to “behave responsibly,” with indoor gyms, swimming pools, nail salons and zoos also welcoming customers as lockdown restrictions ease. Usdaw warned that the pandemic had seen a shocking rise in violence against staff, with incidents often occurring when workers encourage customers to follow Covid-19 safety rules. The union’s 2020 shopworker survey found that 88 per cent had experienced verbal abuse and 9 per cent had even been assaulted, while the vast majority said the issue had worsened over the past year. ....

The devastating findings, published to coincide with the National Education Union’s (NEU) annual conference held online this week, come from the union’s State of Education survey of more than 10,000 teaching staff, conducted last month. Seven in 10 teachers, leaders and support workers warned that workload has increased over the past year, with almost all respondents 95 per cent worried about the impact on their wellbeing. Two-thirds said that the status of the profession has worsened, with the government blamed for failing to listen to or value staff. ....

Before the start of its online annual conference today, the National Education Union (NEU) canvassed more than 10,000 school staff for its State of Education survey. Union leaders said the results send a clear message that “the historic faults of the education system” must now be righted, while Labour urged the Tories to drop their “half-baked ideas” for the sector’s Covid-19 recovery. The vast majority of survey respondents (68 per cent) said that ministers must step in to support children from financially struggling families during the pandemic, with a massive 94 per cent saying that poverty has a clear detrimental impact on learning. ....

The Fight for $15: Lessons for Yorkshire online meeting on Tuesday night, organised by the Yorkshire & the Humber branch of the TUC, honoured the inspirational US-based Fight for $15 movement, which has created a model for worker-led organising. The movement began in 2012 when 200 fast food workers in new York walked out to demand a $15 an hour minimum wage and union rights. It soon spread across the country, prompting states such as California, New Jersey and Florida to commit to a $15-an-hour minimum wage. ....
