Letter to the editor coverage of Cactus Theater applauded


To  the editorial board, Adam Young, Doug Hensley and Matt Dotray, I would like to extend a huge thank you for your extensive coverage of our yearlong closure, its impact on the entertainment scene in Lubbock and most recently, our efforts to recover after pipe breaks in our historic structure caused by the weeklong freezing in late February.  The flooding caused the theater an additional two months in unexpected setbacks just as covid restrictions were anticipated to be rolled back.
Additionally, I applaud your excellent coverage of the efforts by independent music producers and promoters in bringing attention of our plight to Congress - originally known as the #Save Our Stages movement - later included in a relief package dubbed Shuttered Venue Operators Grant   Your interest in exploring the subject shed light on the massive challenges faced by the entertainment industry at the local, state and national level. ....

Virtual panel discussion about homelessness in Lubbock on Wednesday


A panel of local homeless advocates and providers will be discussing past actions to help people experiencing homelessness, and what next steps should be taken to address homelessness.
The virtual discussion will take place from 6:30-8 p.m on Wednesday. It can be viewed on a Zoom live stream and Open Door’s Facebook page.
Wednesday also marks the 10 year anniversary of the Lubbock City Council s vote to make it illegal to sleep on most public property. The vote came in response to the number of people sleeping at downtown s Mahon Library.
Panelists will include Quinn Paschal, who was sleeping at the Mahon Library at the time of the curfew, Dr. Nicholas Bergfeld, lead author of the Lubbock Disparity Report, Adam Pirtle of Texas Housers, Jim Beck, founder of Open Door, Andrea Omojola, Open Door COO, and Chad Wheeler, Open Door CEO.
