Low cloud no barrier for rescue pilots with $300,000 navigation system

It was rescue pilot Matt Boulcott’s first time flying from Christchurch to Timaru using the new system, the windows blacked-out to simulate flying through cloud as he used a predetermined route to reach the town.

A rescue helicopter equipped with a new navigation system allowing it to fly even in low cloud touched down in Timaru for the first time on Wednesday.
“It was really interesting, and a smooth flight,” Boulcott said.
“I m just excited that the training is beginning.”
ICU doctor and GCH Aviation medical director Katherine Townsend said the new system was “essential” for getting patients the best help possible. ....

Police name man fatally swept out to sea north of Timaru

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter lands at Timaru Hospital after the search.
A man who died after being swept out to sea north of Timaru has been named as Richard James Walsh.
The 58-year-old from Levels Valley was dead when he retrieved from the water by helicopter in Seadown, on Saturday.
