MASSENA â A public hearing and public forum are on the schedule for Thursday nightâs Massena Central School Board of Education meeting. A public hearing will be held on the districtâs Communicable Disease Pandemic Plan and a public forum will be held to update the community on the districtâs draft 2021-22 budget. Also scheduled are discussions about the Fall II sports season, which begins Monday, and plans to resume the school musical in May. Superintendent Patrick Brady said the public hearing is required since the Communicable Disease Pandemic Plan will be an addendum to the District Safety Plan, which requires a public hearing to revise. The board must approve the plan by April 1. ....
MASSENA â As tax season continues, so does free tax preparation and electronic filing at the Massena Community Center, 61 Beach St. The assistance is offered by the AARP Tax-Aide program, but is open to everyone and not just AARP members. Itâs available from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays during tax season, until April 15. The only exception is the week of April 5, when it will be available Tuesday and Wednesday so it doesnât conflict with a vaccination clinic Monday. AARP Tax-Aide Sheryl Campbell said the service is drop-off only, with masks required and social distancing with minimal contact. ....
MASSENA â Two sixth-graders from the Massena Central School District took the top two spots in the District 9 competition of a patriotic essay contest sponsored locally by VFW Post 1143 in Massena. Madeline Kepper from Nightengale Elementary School took first place and Emma Tyo from Jefferson Elementary School took second place in the Patriots Pen essay contest. âThatâs a big accomplishment,â VFW Post 1143 Scholarship Chair Frani Marcil said. âWeâre certainly proud of you,â Jefferson Elementary School Principal Duane Richards said. In her essay, Ms. Kepper said her father demonstrated patriotism by serving on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. ....
MASSENA â A Madison Elementary School teacher has been named the winner of a teaching award in a competition thatâs open to kindergarten through eighth grade Earth science teachers throughout the United States. Darcie Fregoe, a sixth-grade Earth science and social studies teacher, was the 2021 recipient of the American Geosciences Institute Edward C. Roy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching. âWe had a faculty meeting and this gentleman was presenting at the meeting and I had no clue it was for me. I didnât think I had a chance. Itâs the best of the best across the country. I was hoping for like semi-finalist. I had no idea. I was shocked and so excited and so honored. I was stunned,â she said. ....
MASSENA â Although one contractor will be doing roof work on multiple schools this summer as part of the second phase of the Massena Central School Districtâs $49.6 million capital project, officials have opted to sign two contracts rather than one. One contract covers work at Nightengale Elementary School, Massena Central High School and J.W. Leary Junior High School. The second contract covers work at Jefferson and Madison elementary schools. âAfter much discussion, we decided to go with two separate contracts. Though it is more paperwork for all involved, the two contracts makes clear that we will have two separate crews and leadership on the project. After the delays we experienced with Jefferson Elementary, it is probably best we keep the pressure on to ensure we have the manpower and appropriate attention to each roof in the project,â Superintendent Patrick Brady said. ....
