A ski where nature meets engineering at Massena's Nicandri center

The Nicandri Nature Center keeps almost a dozen miles of groomed trails along the St. Lawrence River. Rentals are usually available, but not this year due to the pandemic. Photo: David Sommerstein
Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing have exploded in popularity this winter, as a way for people to socialize and exercise safely outdoors during the pandemic. Places like the Nicandri Nature Center are perfect for family outdoor adventures and people of most any ability.

On the bluebird sunny day I visit, the snow is perfect – soft and forgiving, yet fast. After swooping down into the trees, you get a long view of the St. Lawrence River. Far off you can just see the great Moses-Saunders power dam, which spans the river, half in the U.S., half in Canada. ....

Massena Hospital Foundation supports mindfulness programs in two school districts

MASSENA â Two area school districts have received funding for mindfulness programs thanks to the expanded mission and new organizational component of the Massena Hospital Foundation, called the North Country Wellness Resource.
Executive Director Julia Rose said a $25,000 donation from SeaComm in January has allowed the North Country Wellness Resource to provide funding for mindfulness programs in the Massena and St. Lawrence central school districts.
Mindfulness programs are used to help students and staff deal with the mental stresses faced on instruction, either remote or in person, because of COVID-19.
Massena Central Schoolâs funding will support the creation of mindfulness rooms for students and staff in each building, to go along with the schoolâs mindfulness program that was initiated this year. They are working with the Holistic Life Foundation Akwesasne for the program. ....

Massena village officials receive good news from auditor

MASSENA â Certified Public Accountant Carl Seyfarth from Seyfarth & Seyfarth PCAs, P.C. had some good news for village officials following the annual audit.
âItâs pretty rare that we donât have some kind of change to somebodyâs financial statement. You have nothing to change this year. You did a good job,â Mr. Seyfarth said.
He said Treasurer Kevin Felt had done a good job with the villageâs finances.
âI donât see anything unusual in the financial statements themselves this year. Theyâve pretty much been reported as in the past. One of the things I think is helpful for that is he reaches out through the year and asks various questions about things. Heâs got a pretty good idea where heâs going with it,â he said. ....
