saying it is understandable that the average american has difficulty wrapping their head around what the debt limit is. you would think that the u.s., one of the strongest economic powers, you would not think they would be threatening to default on debt annually or every two years. we have a situation where the federal government has a limit imposed by congress on the amount of money that it borrows. because we have annual deficits, we are not taking in the much money from taxes as we re spending, we have to increase our debt over time, and that means we have to borrow. but because we have the debt limit, limitation on how much we can borrow, we are reaching a point where the treasury department cannot borrow the additional money it needs to pay all the bills and also service the outstanding debt that we have. that is a problem. so what the treasury department is doing right now is using extraordinary measures to buy a little time for congress to extend the debt limit. ....
