The pool of candidates vying to become Mitchell s next mayor is set.
Giovanni Lanier and Jason Bates are the two candidates challenging Mayor Bob Everson at the June 8 election, bringing the pool to three. While Tara Volesky took out a mayoral petition in early March, the former candidate did not submit her petition with the 50 signatures needed prior to the deadline. ....

The owner of The Back 40 in downtown Mitchell is seeking to have First Fridays on Main be moved north a block, away from her local restaurant and bar, citing a loss in business.

First Fridays on Main is coming back to downtown Mitchell this summer, but a Main Street business owner is not on board with the location of the event.
During Monday’s Mitchell City Council meeting, Keke Leiferman, owner of The Back 40 Tap house Grill, urged the council to reconsider the location of the summer events due to the negative impact she said it has on her restaurant and bar. Mitchell Main Street and Beyond is proposing to host the monthly events in the same location as previous years on Main Street, stretching from East Seventh Avenue to East Fifth Avenue. ....

Joining Rice in voting against the mandate were Councilmen Kevin McCardle, Jeff Smith and Marty Barington. Dan Allen, Susan Tjarks, Doescher and Sabers voted in favor of extending the mandate another 30 days.

Mitchell’s mask mandate will end on Jan. 27 as the Mitchell City Council decided Tuesday night to let the ordinance expire.
After public commentary, councilman John Doescher made a motion to extend the mandate by 30 days, which was seconded by councilman Dan Sabers. The council split 4-4 during its meeting at City Hall, and Mayor Bob Everson broke the tie with a no vote, which ultimately puts an end to the two-month ordinance. ....

After making it through a challenging 2020, Mitchell Mayor Bob Everson is eager to begin a new year with a new set of goals.
