New Police Citizen Advisory Board Approved in Gwinnett...

To strengthen relationships between the Gwinnett County Police Department and the community, on Tuesday the Board of Commissioners approved the creation of a Citizens Advisory Board. The board will offer input on issues like transparency, use of force, training and dealing with complaints.

The 11-member board, made up of representatives from various groups around the county, will provide advice to the Police Department, the county administrator, and the Board of Commissioners. The Citizens Advisory Board will assist the department using a collaborative problem-solving process that supports both the community and the Police Department’s desire to enhance public safety.

According to a press release from the Board of Commissioners, the new board will offer feedback on reforms to improve community-oriented policing practices, transparency, professionalism, accountability, community inclusion, fairness, effectiveness, and public trust, while taking into account ....

Nicole Love Hendrickson elected as first African Americ...

She is the first African American to hold the position, according to a Gwinnett County press release.
Hendrickson’s ceremony, as well as the two last week for District 1 Commissioner Kirkland Carden and District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins III, was done with COVID-19 precautions in place.
It is my highest honor to serve as Chairwoman of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, Hendrickson said. My promise to you is that we will work to make Gwinnett County a community where economic opportunity is abundant for everyone, a community where affordability isn’t a luxury and a community that leads in regional connectivity. ....

Nicole Love Hendrickson: 'The proverbial glass ceiling has been shattered' as she is sworn in as Gwinnett's first African-American BOC chair

Nicole Love Hendrickson said she did not run for county commission chairwoman to make history, but she did not ignore the significance of her taking the oath to fill that office on Monday.
Hendrickson is the first African-American to be elected to serve as the head of Gwinnett County’s government. She was sworn into the office at a ceremony that showcased the county’s diversity on Monday as her four-year term officially begins Friday.
“I ran to create change, but I would be remiss if I did not reflect on the historical significance of today’s swearing in,” Hendrickson said. “Just 55 years ago, a Black woman could not even vote. Being the first Black Democratic woman to hold this seat is not a responsibility I take lightly. I realize I stand on the shoulders of giants and that my victory represents another step forward in advancing the vision of a country where all people have access to opportunities to succeed. ....

Gwinnett residents have until Dec. 31 to weigh in on county's proposed 2021 budget

Gwinnett County officials got something unusual on Wednesday: a budget public hearing where no one got up to speak about items in the county’s proposed budget. But that doesn’t mean they won’t necessarily hear from the public on the budget.
Although the only public hearing scheduled on the $1.91 billion proposed budget has come and gone, residents will be able to continue submitting written feedback through the end of this month. The cutoff for written public comment is Dec. 31.
“We’ve been providing the online mechanism for providing comments and certainly comments that are sent by email to the staff or to the commissioners will be fed into the overall package of information about comments that are received from the public,” Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash said during the hearing. “This (hearing) is not only way to provide comments.” ....
