Home of Guiding Hands receives $100,000 to support respite care for children with disabilities

Print Cynthia Magnuson says a typical day in her household is “utter chaos.” She and her husband, Bob, are lucky if they get more than five hours of sleep at night, and “self-care” often consists of uninterrupted time washing the family’s laundry or completing grocery shopping. Her three young sons Wesley, 8; Grayson, 4; and William, 3 keep her very busy. Her youngest boys whom she refers to as “the littles” are both living with autism spectrum disorder, while her oldest son has been diagnosed with severe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and a mood disorder. “When you’re in these types of circumstances, sometimes it’s so difficult to just do laundry, or just clean something, because it’s a 24/7 job,” Cynthia said. “If I turn my back for two seconds, something bad can happen.”

Vaccinating Joshua: Autistic youth finally gets his turn

Print Before the pandemic, 16-year-old Joshua Espinoza was able to visit his family every weekend. But for the last year, time with his mother, father and brother has been limited to quick sessions at his group home to reduce the chances of coronavirus infection. As of Monday, the 11th grader with severe autism is among an estimated 4.4 million statewide with high-risk medical conditions and disabilities who will join the state’s vaccine priority list, significantly increasing his odds of receiving the doses he needs to once again travel to his family’s home in Paradise Hills. It has been heartbreakingly clear, said his mother, Maria Espinoza, that her son really, really misses their weekends together.

Despite Indiana roots, Cleveland is forever home to 'A Christmas Story'

Despite Indiana roots, Cleveland is forever home to ‘A Christmas Story’ Updated Dec 13, 2020; Posted Dec 13, 2020 On a winter night, the A Christmas Story House & Museum looks every bit like a scene from the 1983 movie. Although Cleveland boasts several locations featured in the film, it is Northeast Ohio’s unwavering enthusiasm for the holiday classic that ensures that Ralphie is here to stay. (Photo Courtesy of A Christmas Story House & Museum) Facebook Share CLEVELAND, Ohio Few movies are more closely associated with a city than “A Christmas Story” is with Cleveland. Although Jean Shepherd’s short story is largely based on his youth in Hammond, Ind., Cleveland’s enthusiasm for the holiday classic and a number of easy-to-visit filming locations ensure that the Parkers, the Bumpuses and Black Bart are not going anywhere.
