NEWPORT The Newport High softball team used a seven-run second inning and an eight-run fourth to pull away for an 18-5 win over Hanover on Wednesday, bumping the Tigers’ record to 7-1 on the season.
Newport overturned an early Hanover score with a two-run first, then took over with 12 hits. Winning pitcher Tanya Sanchez (five strikeouts, one walk, two HBP) helped herself with a walk, single, double, triple, three RBIs and four runs scored.
“I actually feel pretty good,” Newport coach Sam McNeel said. “Tanya’s doing extremely well on the mound for us. We’ve got a good catcher (Emmah O’Connor) behind the plate. . I think we can play with just about anybody.”

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION The Hartford High boys lacrosse team ignored the wet conditions to dominate BFA-Fairfax to the tune of a 12-1 win at the Alumni Athletic Complex on Wednesday.
Joe Barwood (two assists), Gordon Willey (one assist) and Chris Pierce racked up three-goal hat tricks to power the attack. Ezra Mock, Bentley Boonyaharn and Blaine Gour provided the others. Coach Grant Whiteway credited Hartford’s second-half play on defense, with Connor Tierney scooping up six ground balls and forcing two takeaways.
Goaltender Tarin Prior recorded 21 saves. The Canes host St. Johnsbury on Tuesday.
