Last night, a half a block away another pipe broke this morning. Berkeley residents watched the asphalt rising as the water poured through the streets. We come out this morning and its totally rushing down the street, and its like there is a volcano in the middle of the street that, like, when anybody gets close to it pulses. Its coming up through the street all over the place. I lived here for 18 years. I lived through el nino. This is as bad as el nino to see the water at this level. Reporter crews turned off the water near cornell and gilman street leaving about 50 families dry for the day. According to east bay mud, the stretch of pipe broke in three places. The cause likely the old age of the castiron pipes. The pipe that broke here on gilman was 79 years old. It was installed in 1937, so its possible that age was factor. Reporter east bay mud has been trying to replace pipes before this kind of break happened. One of their projects is just around the corner. I hope it doesnt happ ....
