thank you so much for joining us. i m marcia ely from the brooklyn public library center for brooklyn history. and the arts and culture team, be p l presents. this year, brooklyn public library celebrates its 125th anniversary. our birthday is a chance to talk about all the library does and one important part of that work is steward in the extraordinary special collections at the center for brooklyn history. these archives are the combined materials from the brooklyn public library s special collections and those of the former brooklyn historical society. they are literally the most comprehensive collection of frequent related materials in the world. so we are celebrating these amazing collections in a 125th anniversary series titled out of the box. five programs that put just a few of the most important or most frequently used or beloved materials center stage. clearly, the dodgers and jackie robinson have to be part of that lineup. so tonight we re bringing together a reall

Tonights program, the history of lenape forced removals, is one part of a larger and far ranging initiative that we are honored to be presenting with the wisdom and leadership of the Lenape Center. This Initiative Includes new yorks first ever lenape curated expedition which is now on view at bpls as well as many topics such as the myth of the purchase of manhattan we will have poetry readings. Theres an upcoming anthology of essays on lenape history. I am humbled to represent my bpl colleagues, who have led this ambitious effort. It is truly my honor to introduce tonights discussion on their behalf. In a few moments, you will hear three perspectives on a history that has too long been overlooked. Other founders and historical highlights all popped up. A few of you also mentioned places like historic jamestown, plymouth plantation in massachusetts and Colonial Williamsburg. A few people mentioned the history of slavery. It was notably because of either the 16 19 project or black lives matter protests. There were a few omissions. No one mentioned individual women, i think, or any individual Indigenous People by name.
