Nayeli used the loaned computer to attend online classes. Her mother logged on to a Spanish-speaking book club and relaxation classes. The technology helped her father answer questions that had been difficult to understand with limited English.
“It helped us,” said Manuel Lara Cervantes, Nayeli’s father. “We had to adapt, to start with the basics, and they helped us step by step.”
The help came from La Colonia de Eden Gardens, Inc.’s, Parental Access for Student Success (PASS) program. During the COVID-19 lockdown, PASS secured Google Chromebooks with prepaid internet subscriptions to loan to low-income, undocumented immigrant families. The loans included training and assistance on how to run computer programs that had become part of everyday life Google Classroo ....

Local leaders help bridge vaccine equity gaps in Solana Beach's Eden Gardens neighborhood

North County communities have some of the highest COVID-19 vaccination rates in San Diego, but ensuring the shots are available to everyone eligible has been more of a challenge for neighborhoods that face a digital divide, language barrier or other obstacles.
A few local leaders have tried to bridge those gaps in Solana Beach. Lisa Montes, a fourth-generation resident of the city’s La Colonia de Eden Gardens neighborhood, said people “don’t realize that there is a need in Solana Beach,” a coastal enclave more associated with its affluence.
February and March vaccination clinics at a park in Eden Gardens, the center of the city’s Mexican community, helped about 60 local residents receive their shots. Those clinics were followed up by efforts to help residents get vaccinated at the nearby Del Mar Fairgrounds superstation if they had trouble scheduling or getting to appointments on their own. For about 10 years, the Solana Beach nonprofit La Colonia de Eden Gardens has held events, programs and other outreach efforts to promote its mission “to empower our youth to make positive choices and to improve the availability of resources for all residents.”
“You get families involved,” said Manny Aguilar, a Chicago native who started the nonprofit with his wife, Mary Ann, who is from Solana Beach. “It’s a different concept and it’s beautiful to see the families growing from the opportunity to learn together about these things, so they have something in common to talk about at home, and there’s a service component to it.” ....
