Developer investigates privatising Mangawhai water supply
The Kaipara District Council is unsure how to respond until it completes a feasibility study.
Mangawhai’s water supply will be owned and operated by private developers if a proposed pipeline project goes ahead.
Mangawhai Central Ltd has approached the Kaipara District Council (KDC) with a proposal to build a pipeline from Langs Beach to Mangawhai, connecting the town to the Whangarei water supply.
The Whangarei District Council would sell water to Mangawhai Central, which would then on-sell the water to houses in the Central development, and other suburbs that connect in the future.

Kaipara District Council has taken the unusual step of putting off its decision-making on plans for Mangawhai central s $750 million urban development.
Mangawhai usually has 4000 permanent residents, but its population is expected to reach close to 20,000 in the next two decades

The deferment came at last week s Kaipara District Council (KDC) meeting in Mangawhai.
Hearing commissioners have recommended KDC accepts Mangawhai Central Limited s private plan change application, subject to conditions, for the centre of the settlement. At the KDC meeting, the agenda item about it recommended the council voted in favour of the private plan change.
About 4000 people live in Mangawhai, Northland s fastest growing area - and one of the quickest developing in New Zealand. The developer s updated plans would add about 2500 people to that.

A decision by independent commissioners on a proposal to build up to 1000 homes and a business area in a rapidly growing Northland seaside town is expected within the next few weeks.
Auckland-based Mangawhai Central Ltd has applied to Kaipara District Council for a private plan change to develop about 130 hectares of former sheep and beef grazing land between Mangawhai Village and Mangawhai Heads.
