Supreme Court affirms lower court anti-stalking order against shooting range owner

WEST PAWLET — The Vermont Supreme Court affirmed a lower court’s decision to issue a protective order against Daniel Banyai, who owns the Slate Ridge shooting facility in West Pawlet.
The protective order was granted to Banyai’s neighbor Mandy Hulett, who sought the anti-stalking order against Banyai in December 2020 on behalf of herself and her children after she said Banyai posted threatening messages about her family on Facebook, causing her family “great emotional distress,” and said, “they feared imminent physical harm.”
Banyai declined to comment on the case.

Vermont firearms ‘school’ ordered to permanently close, pay $47,000 to town

PAWLET, Vt. An environmental court judge has ordered Slate Ridge, a firearms training facility in Pawlet that has caused local strife and garnered national attention, to permanently close.
The court ruled Friday that the facility’s owner, Daniel Banyai, must dismantle all of the buildings on his property that do not have a zoning permit. He owes fines totaling $46,603, which will go to the town of Pawlet.
In a 22-page ruling, Judge Thomas Durkin outlines the multi-year conflict between Banyai and the town, which dates back to 2017, when Banyai first applied for a zoning permit so he could operate a “school,” referring to Slate Ridge. ....
