Portage Memorial Day parade canceled, ceremony still set to take place By Will Kriss May 18, 2021 | 3:22 PM PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Tuesday, the City of Portage announced that the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5855 has canceled the annual Portage Memorial Day Parade. However, the Memorial Day Ceremony sponsored by the American Legion Post 207 will still take place at 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. Gary VerMeulen, who coordinates the Memorial Day Parade for the VFW Post 5855, released the following statement: “We believe the cancelation of the Memorial Day Parade again this year is the right thing to do. Our members look forward to coming together on Memorial Day in 2022 to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”

PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Portage will be hosting its “Lanterns on the Lake” event this Saturday, and there is still time for residents to sign up. The event takes place on Saturday, May 15 from 8 – 9:30 p.m. at Ramona Park Beach, located at 8600 S. Sprinkle Road. Participants will “light up the lake” with a lantern that honors loved ones or float words of hope and inspiration, according to event officials. “My family and I participated in this meaningful event last year,” City Manager Joe La Margo said in a statement. “The music and community atmosphere create a feeling of hope and happiness and healing.”
