Meteors’ 2013 MVP and member of 2015 QBL championship team Matthew Adekponya will suit up as a short-term replacement player for his former side. The 30-year-old’s signing comes after Meteor forward Kye Medhurst suffered a foot injury during a pre-season match three weeks ago. Meteors coach Joel Khalu said he was ecstatic the 194cm forward was re-joining the club. “He knows most of the guys in the group really well and I’ve coached him for many years, so he understands our style of play and what we’re trying to accomplish at both ends of the floor,” he said. ....

Both sides will feature in a double-header to begin the season, with games in Townsville and Cairns scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights. Meteors coach Joel Khalu said it was an exciting time to be a basketball fan in Mackay. âItâs been a long time coming, with last season being cancelled,â he said. âEveryoneâs pretty pumped the season is back, and everyoneâs excited to play.â Mackay entered the NBL1 North league in 2020, but never played a game as COVID-19 forced the seasonâs cancellation. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only The Under-18 Mackay Meteorettes are one win away from playing off for a state championship following a hard-fought 58-51 win over Southern Districts Spartans on Friday. The Meteorettes finished top of Pool A courtesy of the seven-point win over the then-second ranked Spartans. The loss knocked the Spartans out of the top two and consigned them to a consolation final. For the Meteorettes, the win capped a perfect 5-0 record in the pool matches, ahead of Saturday’s semi-finals. Point guard Paris Santacaterina was again the prime mover for the Meteorettes, with another 23 points against the Spartans. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only The Mackay Meteorettes are the only unbeaten team in Pool A at the close of day two of the U18 Girls State Championships on the Gold Coast. Led by CQ Cup winning senior Meteorettes duo Phoebe Holmes and Paris Santacaterina, the U18s knocked off Townsville Flames 69-57 in Thursday’s early game before dominating hosts Gold Coast Breakers 85-67 in the afternoon. On Wednesday, the Meteorettes opened their championships account with a 103-38 win over the Brisbane Capitals before outlasting SWM Pirates Purple 86-68. It means the Mackay side is now one of just two teams still unbeaten on the Gold Coast, alongside Pool B leaders Gold Coast Waves. ....
Their first game gets going from 11am on Wednesday against the Northside Wizards. I ve had the pleasure of coaching these guys each second year over the last eight years so I ve coached them four times, he said. They re a great bunch of guys. We ve often played in division one. This year we ve been relegated to division two. So we re looking at winning a medal this year. For a lot of these guys it will be their last state championships because under-18s is the last year of junior basketball. So I want them to go through and hopefully take a medal from this competition for their work over those eight years. ....
