Meteorettes into U18 Qld champs gold medal match

The enviable title of best in Queensland goes on the line this afternoon when the Mackay Meteorettes take on hosts Gold Coast Waves in the final of the U18 Girls’ State Basketball Championships.
Lukass Blicavs’s Meteorettes punched their ticket to the gold medal match with a 73-52 win over Logan Thunder in Saturday’s major semi-final.
They were later joined in the decider by pre-tournament favourites Gold Coast Waves, who handily dispatched South West Metro Pirates 95-68.

The under 18 Sunshine Coast Phoenix played South West Metro Pirates Purple in their final match of the state basketball championships at the Gold Coast on Sunday morning.
The Phoenix kept the game close but were unable to overcome their rivals.

Meteorettes set the tone for big U18 state basketball champs

The Mackay Meteorettes are the only unbeaten team in Pool A at the close of day two of the U18 Girls State Championships on the Gold Coast.
Led by CQ Cup winning senior Meteorettes duo Phoebe Holmes and Paris Santacaterina, the U18s knocked off Townsville Flames 69-57 in Thursday’s early game before dominating hosts Gold Coast Breakers 85-67 in the afternoon.
On Wednesday, the Meteorettes opened their championships account with a 103-38 win over the Brisbane Capitals before outlasting SWM Pirates Purple 86-68.
It means the Mackay side is now one of just two teams still unbeaten on the Gold Coast, alongside Pool B leaders Gold Coast Waves. ....

Their first game gets going from 11am on Wednesday against the Northside Wizards.
I ve had the pleasure of coaching these guys each second year over the last eight years so I ve coached them four times, he said.
They re a great bunch of guys.
We ve often played in division one. This year we ve been relegated to division two. So we re looking at winning a medal this year.
For a lot of these guys it will be their last state championships because under-18s is the last year of junior basketball.
So I want them to go through and hopefully take a medal from this competition for their work over those eight years. ....
